5 Mistakes People Make When Getting Furniture Made — And How to Avoid Them

Getting furniture custom-made is one of the best investments you can make in your home. But a few common mistakes can turn a good experience into a stressful one. Here’s what to watch out for.

1. Not Getting a Written Quote

Verbal agreements are where most furniture disputes begin. “He said it would cost X” versus “I quoted Y for a different scope” — these conversations happen constantly.

Before any work begins, insist on a written quote that specifies:

  • Materials and grades
  • Dimensions
  • Hardware brand/quality
  • Total cost and payment schedule
  • Timeline

A contractor who won’t put it in writing is a risk. A contractor who happily puts everything in writing is confident in what they’re delivering.

2. Changing the Design After Work Has Started

It’s natural to have second thoughts once you can see the work taking shape. But design changes after fabrication has started are expensive — material may need to be recut, time is lost, and costs increase.

Spend more time upfront on the design. Ask your contractor to show you a sketch or diagram. Visualise where everything goes. Finalise before the first cut is made.

3. Choosing the Cheapest Quote Without Asking Why

Getting three quotes and picking the lowest seems like smart buying. Sometimes it is. Often it isn’t.

If one quote is significantly lower than the others, the most important question is: what has been reduced? Is it a cheaper grade of ply? No-brand hardware? A shorter warranty? Less experienced labour?

Ask specifically what material they’re using, which hardware brand, and what warranty they provide. Compare those details — not just the numbers.

4. Not Planning Around Civil Work

Custom furniture is installed after the walls are plastered, the tiling is done, and the electrical points are in place. If you order a kitchen and the tiling isn’t finished when the contractor arrives to install, everyone loses time — and you may be charged for the delay.

Coordinate your furniture timeline with your civil contractor. Furniture typically comes last.

5. Skipping the Site Visit

Some people describe their room over the phone, get a quote, and place an order. This almost never ends well. Rooms have unexpected columns, uneven walls, doors that open into the furniture space, and other surprises that only a physical visit reveals.

Any contractor worth hiring will insist on a site visit before quoting. If they’re willing to quote without seeing the space, that’s worth asking about.

The good news: all five of these mistakes are easy to avoid once you know about them. At VS Furnitures we start every project with a free site visit, provide written estimates, and walk you through the design before any material is ordered. Call 9827348796 or WhatsApp 9977250002 to book yours.
