Furniture that looks great on day one but warps, swells, or chips within two years is a very common problem in Indian homes — including Indore. A lot of that comes down to material choice. Here’s what you should know before anything gets built in your home.
The Indore Climate Factor
Indore experiences hot, dry summers and a proper monsoon season. This means:
- Wood-based materials expand in humidity and contract in dry heat
- Kitchens experience moisture, steam, and heat simultaneously
- Furniture near exterior walls or poorly ventilated rooms faces more stress
The material that was “fine in the showroom” may behave very differently in your actual home over a few years.
Plywood: The Gold Standard
Good quality plywood is the material most skilled furniture contractors use as the base for cabinets, wardrobes, and kitchen units. It has alternating wood grain layers that resist warping and hold screws reliably over time.
Types to know:
- MR (Moisture Resistant) Ply — suitable for bedrooms, living rooms, and low-humidity areas
- BWP (Boiling Waterproof) Ply — essential for kitchens, especially near sinks, the cooking area, and bathrooms
Always ask your contractor which grade of ply they’re using where.
Particleboard and MDF
These are cheaper alternatives to plywood, made from wood shavings or fibres bonded with adhesive. They’re used widely in readymade furniture and in cost-cutting contractor work.
The problem: Particleboard and MDF swell when they absorb moisture. Once swollen, the laminate bubbles, screws no longer hold, and the piece is very hard to repair. In Indore’s kitchens, this can happen within 3–5 years.
For bedrooms in dry areas, MDF can be acceptable. For kitchens, avoid it as the primary material.
Laminates and Finishes
The outer finish of your furniture matters both aesthetically and functionally.
- High-pressure laminates (HPL) are the most durable — scratch-resistant and easy to clean
- PVC membranes give a seamless look but can peel at edges in heat
- Veneer looks premium but requires more maintenance in humid conditions
For Indore homes, high-pressure laminate is the most practical choice for kitchens. For bedrooms and living rooms, more options are viable.
Hardware: Don’t Skimp Here
Soft-close hinges, drawer channels, and cabinet handles are used multiple times every single day. Cheap hardware that costs ₹30 per hinge will fail in two years. Good hardware from reliable brands (Hettich, Häfele, Ebco) costs more but lasts a decade.
The hardware is the part of your furniture you actually touch — it defines how your kitchen or wardrobe feels every day. It’s the last place to cut costs.
What to Ask Your Contractor
Before work begins, ask your contractor specifically:
- What brand and grade of plywood are you using?
- Which areas will have BWP ply?
- Which hardware brand are you specifying?
A contractor who can answer these questions clearly — and back them up in writing — is someone who knows their work.
At VS Furnitures we specify materials upfront, explain the options, and use quality ply and hardware on every project. Call 9827348796 or WhatsApp 9977250002 for a free site visit in Indore.
