When clients in Indore ask us about wardrobes, the first question is almost always “sliding or hinged?” It is the right question to start with. The answer depends on your bedroom size, how you like to access your clothes, and your budget. This guide covers all of it.
Sliding vs Hinged: The Real Differences
| Feature | Sliding Wardrobe | Hinged Wardrobe |
|---|---|---|
| Space to open | None — doors slide within the frame | ~2 feet clearance needed in front |
| Best bedroom size | Smaller bedrooms (under 12 ft wide) | Larger bedrooms (12 ft+ width) |
| Internal visibility | One panel at a time | Full interior visible when open |
| Feel | Modern, flush, seamless look | Classic, traditional look |
| Cost | Slightly higher (sliding track mechanism) | Slightly lower |
| Mirror option | Very common, looks great | Available, but takes up wall space when open |
| Durability | Track needs occasional cleaning; lasts well | Hinges may need tightening over years |
Bedroom Size Recommendations
Under 10 feet wide bedroom: Sliding wardrobe is strongly recommended. There is simply not enough space to open hinged wardrobe doors comfortably — you will be stepping back into the bed or doorway every time. Sliding doors stay within the wardrobe frame and take no floor space.
10 to 12 feet wide bedroom: Either works. Sliding is still more practical if the bed is positioned directly in front of the wardrobe. Hinged works well if the wardrobe is on a side wall with clear space in front.
12+ feet wide bedroom: Both options are practical. If you prefer the look of traditional hinged doors and the ability to see everything at once when you open them, a larger bedroom makes this work comfortably.
Walk-in wardrobe / dressing room: Hinged or open-shelf configuration — this is a separate space and different rules apply. Talk to us if you are planning a walk-in.
Floor-to-Ceiling: Almost Always the Right Answer
Whether you choose sliding or hinged, we always recommend building the wardrobe floor-to-ceiling. Here is why:
Maximum storage. The top section (above the standard 7-foot door height) is often left open or wasted in ready-made wardrobes. A floor-to-ceiling custom wardrobe uses this space for loft storage — ideal for seasonal items, extra bedding, and luggage.
Cleaner look. A gap above the wardrobe collects dust and looks unfinished. A ceiling-height wardrobe looks built-in and permanent.
Better value per rupee. The structural carcass is already going in — extending it to the ceiling adds relatively little material cost but significant storage.
Internal Fittings: What Makes a Wardrobe Practical
The internal layout of the wardrobe determines how useful it is every day. Standard options we offer:
Hanging section: Full-length hanging (for sarees, suits, dresses) or half-height double hanging (two rows of shorter items — shirts, folded trousers). Most wardrobes benefit from a mix of both.
Drawers: Tandem drawers (deep pull-out drawers) are far more practical than shelves for folded clothes — you can see everything at once without pulling items out. We recommend at least 3 to 4 drawers in any wardrobe used daily.
Shelves: For folded sarees, jeans, and items that do not hang. Adjustable shelf heights allow you to reconfigure as your needs change.
Pull-out shoe rack: A dedicated pull-out shoe section keeps footwear accessible without a separate shoe cabinet. Works best in the base of the wardrobe.
Trouser rack: A pull-out trouser rack hangs multiple pairs without creasing — useful for professionals with many formal trousers.
Material Options for Indore Wardrobes
Carcass (the structural body): BWP or BWR plywood. This is what holds the wardrobe together — it should be 18mm plywood for the sides, 12mm for internal partitions and shelves. Do not accept particle board for the carcass.
Shutters for hinged wardrobes: High-pressure laminate (HPL) in any colour, acrylic (high-gloss), or PU painted finish. Mirror panels can be incorporated into any of these.
Sliding door panels: These are typically heavier and need a quality sliding track. We use aluminium-frame sliding systems with soft-close bottom tracks. The panels can be laminate, acrylic, or full-panel mirror.
Mirror options: A mirror shutter on a wardrobe is practical — you do not need a separate full-length mirror in the room. Mirror panels are available on both sliding and hinged configurations.
How Much Does a Custom Wardrobe Cost in Indore?
| Wardrobe Type | Approximate Price Range |
|---|---|
| 4-foot sliding wardrobe (basic internals) | ₹35,000 – ₹55,000 |
| 6-foot sliding wardrobe (standard internals) | ₹55,000 – ₹85,000 |
| 8-foot sliding wardrobe (full internals) | ₹80,000 – ₹1,20,000 |
| 6-foot hinged wardrobe (standard internals) | ₹45,000 – ₹75,000 |
| Full bedroom (wardrobe + bed frame + dressing table) | ₹1,20,000 – ₹2,50,000 |
These are complete, floor-to-ceiling units with BWP plywood carcass, laminate shutters, and quality hardware. The price range reflects differences in size, internal fitting choices, and shutter finish (laminate vs acrylic).
For exact pricing, we need a site visit — wardrobe pricing depends heavily on the wall dimensions of your specific room.
Questions to Ask Your Wardrobe Carpenter
Before agreeing to any wardrobe job in Indore, ask:
- What is the carcass material? Correct answer: BWP or BWR plywood. Not MDF, not particle board.
- What hardware do you use for the hinges / sliding track? Look for Hettich, Hafele, or equivalent quality brands.
- Is it floor-to-ceiling? Confirm the exact height.
- What internal fittings are included? Get a written spec — number of drawers, shelves, hanging rails.
- What is the warranty and is it in writing? You should get at least a 1-year written warranty.
